[Image description: A black square with white text reads, “did you know? There is a cognitive bias called the Google effect where a person tends to forget information that can easily be found using a search engine. did-you-kno.tumblr.com.”]
Google is going to make us all stupid, GPS will make us forget how to get places. Spell check has us forgetting how to spell, and calculators give us no reason to remember how to do basic math. So much for technology enriching our lives…
Seems reasonable. Why the hell would I waste brain space on something I can find again later? My fourth grade library teacher told us you don’t need to know everything, you just need to know where to find it. That’s why I am a librarian. I know where to find shit.
People made this dumb as shit argument when books became a thing, too. They were all, CHILDREN WILL BE STUPID BECAUSE THEY WON’T NEED TO MEMORIZE THE REIGNS OF KINGS ANYMORE! THEY’LL JUST LOOK IT UP IN BOOKS! THE HUMANITY!
Memorizing things is not intelligence. Use your brain power for more important things, like critical thinking.
